Verses about Hypocrisy and deception

Unquestionably, they the disbelievers turn away their breasts to hide themselves from Him. Unquestionably, [even] when they cover themselves in their clothing, Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.

And of the people are some who say, ‘ We believe in Allah,’ but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allah, they consider the trial of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allah. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, ‘ Indeed, We were with you.’ Is not Allah most knowing of what is within the breasts of all creatures?

And of the people are some who say, ‘ We believe in Allah and the Last Day,’ but they are not believers.

Do you covet [the hope, O believers], that they would believe for you while a party of them used to hear the words of Allah and then distort the Torah after they had understood it while they were knowing?

And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.

And do not be like those who say, ‘ We have heard,’ while they do not hear.

[Remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease said, ‘ Their religion has deluded those [Muslims].’ But whoever relies upon Allah - then indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

But if they intend to deceive you - then sufficient for you is Allah. It is He who supported you with His help and with the believers

And a faction of the People of the Scripture say [to each other], ‘ Believe in that which was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day and reject it at its end that perhaps they will abandon their religion,

Here you are loving them but they are not loving you, while you believe in the Scripture - all of it. And when they meet you, they say, ‘ We believe.’ But when they are alone, they bite their fingertips at you in rage. Say, ‘ Die in your rage. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts.’

Then after distress, He sent down upon you security [in the form of] drowsiness, overcoming a faction of you, while another faction worried about themselves, thinking of Allah other than the truth - the thought of ignorance, saying, ‘ Is there anything for us [to have done] in this matter?’ Say, ‘ Indeed, the matter belongs completely to Allah.’ They conceal within themselves what they will not reveal to you. They say, ‘ If there was anything we could have done in the matter, some of us would not have been killed right here.’ Say, ‘ Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their death beds.’ [It was] so that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts. And Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts.

And that He might make evident those who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, ‘ Come, fight in the way of Allah or [at least] defend.’ They said, ‘ If we had known [there would be] fighting, we would have followed you.’ They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allah is most Knowing of what they conceal -

O Prophet, fear Allah and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.

And [remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease said, ‘ Allah and His Messenger did not promise us except delusion,’

That Allah may reward the truthful for their truth and punish the hypocrites if He wills or accept their repentance. Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.

And do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites but do not harm them, and rely upon Allah. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.

If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease and those who spread rumors in al-Madinah do not cease, We will surely incite you against them; then they will not remain your neighbors therein except for a little.

[It was] so that Allah may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the men and women who associate others with Him and that Allah may accept repentance from the believing men and believing women. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.

Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to Taghut, while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray.

And indeed, there is among you he who lingers behind; and if disaster strikes you, he says, ‘ Allah has favored me in that I was not present with them.’

And they say, ‘ [We pledge] obedience.’ But when they leave you, a group of them spend the night determining to do other than what you say. But Allah records what they plan by night. So leave them alone and rely upon Allah. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.

What is [the matter] with you [that you are] two groups concerning the hypocrites, while Allah has made them fall back [into error and disbelief] for what they earned. Do you wish to guide those whom Allah has sent astray? And he whom Allah sends astray - never will you find for him a way [of guidance].

They conceal [their evil intentions and deeds] from the people, but they cannot conceal [them] from Allah, and He is with them [in His knowledge] when they spend the night in such as He does not accept of speech. And ever is Allah, of what they do, encompassing.

Give tidings to the hypocrites that there is for them a painful punishment -

On the [same] Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to those who believed, ‘ Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light.’ It will be said, ‘ Go back behind you and seek light.’ And a wall will be placed between them with a door, its interior containing mercy, but on the outside of it is torment.

And among them, [O Muhammad], are those who listen to you, until when they depart from you, they say to those who were given knowledge, ‘ What has he said just now?’ Those are the ones of whom Allah has sealed over their hearts and who have followed their [own] desires.

Those who believe say, ‘ Why has a surah not been sent down? But when a precise surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is hypocrisy looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them [would have been]

Or do those in whose hearts is disease think that Allah would never expose their [feelings of] hatred?

Have you not considered those who practice hypocrisy, saying to their brothers who have disbelieved among the People of the Scripture, ‘ If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and we will not obey, in regard to you, anyone - ever; and if you are fought, we will surely aid you.’ But Allah testifies that they are liars.

But the hypocrites say, ‘ We have believed in Allah and in the Messenger, and we obey’ ; then a party of them turns away after that. And those are not believers.

[That is] so He may make what Satan throws in a trial for those within whose hearts is disease and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension.

When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, ‘ We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.’ And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.

Have you not considered those who make allies of a people with whom Allah has become angry? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to untruth while they know [they are lying].

O Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.

And [that] He may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women, and the polytheist men and polytheist women - those who assume about Allah an assumption of evil nature. Upon them is a misfortune of evil nature; and Allah has become angry with them and has cursed them and prepared for them Hell, and evil it is as a destination.

O Messenger, let them not grieve you who hasten into disbelief of those who say, ‘ We believe’ with their mouths, but their hearts believe not, and from among the Jews. [They are] avid listeners to falsehood, listening to another people who have not come to you. They distort words beyond their [proper] usages, saying ‘ If you are given this, take it; but if you are not given it, then beware.’ But he for whom Allah intends fitnah - never will you possess [power to do] for him a thing against Allah. Those are the ones for whom Allah does not intend to purify their hearts. For them in this world is disgrace, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.

So you see those in whose hearts is disease hastening into [association with] them, saying, ‘ We are afraid a misfortune may strike us.’ But perhaps Allah will bring conquest or a decision from Him, and they will become, over what they have been concealing within themselves, regretful.

Say, ‘ Shall I inform you of [what is] worse than that as penalty from Allah? [It is that of] those whom Allah has cursed and with whom He became angry and made of them apes and pigs and slaves of Taghut. Those are worse in position and further astray from the sound way.’

May Allah pardon you, [O Muhammad]; why did you give them permission [to remain behind]? [You should not have] until it was evident to you who were truthful and you knew [who were] the liars.

O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.

And those with excuses among the bedouins came to be permitted [to remain], and they who had lied to Allah and His Messenger sat [at home]. There will strike those who disbelieved among them a painful punishment.

The bedouins are stronger in disbelief and hypocrisy and more likely not to know the limits of what [laws] Allah has revealed to His Messenger. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.

And among those around you of the bedouins are hypocrites, and [also] from the people of Madinah. They have become accustomed to hypocrisy. You, [O Muhammad], do not know them, [but] We know them. We will punish them twice [in this world]; then they will be returned to a great punishment.

And [there are] those [hypocrites] who took for themselves a mosque for causing harm and disbelief and division among the believers and as a station for whoever had warred against Allah and His Messenger before. And they will surely swear, ‘ We intended only the best.’ And Allah testifies that indeed they are liars.

And whenever a surah is revealed, there are among the hypocrites those who say, ‘ Which of you has this increased faith?’ As for those who believed, it has increased them in faith, while they are rejoicing.
